random rolling What is the formula for the rolling of the dices ? Is it based on the actual time of the roll ? I have the feeling that the rolling is not really random ! |

How can you tell if dice are "not really random"? If you get the same two dice in a row, it doesn't mean it's not random. If you get 3 doubles in a row, it still doesn't mean it's not random. It's just a matter of luck. Or lack thereof (pardon the pun ). |

random Random, on a computer, does simply not exist ! Rolling of dices is based on a certain algorithm which is bases on a seed or the actual time or anything else which makes you believe it's random, but it's not. I simply would like to know which algorithm is used. And it's true that sometimes I feel very unlucky when my opponent makes double six two times in a row |

It used to be that way, but now most Unix systems (including Linux and FreeBSD), provide a hardware based random number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//dev/random It uses system/network interrupts and hard disk for true randomness. If it's good enough for use in generating cryptographic keys for high-value or long-term protection, it should be good enough for rolling dice in backgammon games. I'm assuming of course that this site is running Linux/FreeBSD, so please correct me if I'm wrong! Since it seems to be always available, it's probably not Windows. |

We use hardware based /dev/random. See also this FAQ regarding dice. |
