The shotslap situation Match score was guthers 0 shotslap 1 before this game - which might explain the cubings. I need this one as I have lost a few in a row now. A couple more wins needed to get over the line. |

An odd occurence in guthers vs mikeyo Normally at the start of a game both players roll a single die and the winner takes first move. I don't know how ZE works this out, but here one or other player gets to roll both dice. With a cube in play this means that player can double before rolling the first time, which is wrong. At 4-3 to me, and with the cube back in play, Mikeyo reasonably thus took the opportunity to double straight away, before anything had moved. However, as I explained to him, at that score I should normally be able to see his opening move, and my own reply, then maybe decide to use the "free drop" - http://www.bkgm.com/gloss/lookup.cgi?free+drop Mikeyo has kindly offered to restart, and I have accepted that, but I think a ruling might need to be added to the list for future reference, as this is actually against the rules of backgammon. |

Free drop Yes, I have wondered the same before too Guthers. It would seem the only way around it would be to abstain from offering the cube until one's second roll.. unless ZE were to change how their software operates, which I doubt! |

I felt slightly guilty winning with that double. |

Good spot IIRC i am also victim of this a couple of times..as i don't play BG from many years and don't know much rules...I learned most of them which were discussed here. I thought after crawford game opponent can double any time and i have to accept it anyhow its good this issue has come to light.. lets see what our veteran players say.. |

Free drop I had never heard of this idea until guther's post. It does appear to potentially be a good idea that the players might want to vote on. If the majority approves, then it could be incorporated into future CTs. However, given that the "free drop" idea has not been used in the current or previous CTs, I suggest we stick to the rules as stated by our current hosts. In other words, free drops should not be allowed until the majority votes on it as has been done for the Crawford and Dead Cube rules, the rules on good sportsmanship, 80% rule, etc. (as per the format links under each of the CTs on KK's website). Just my 2 cents. |
