FORMAT of new tourney because of the challenge of trying to get 8 or 16 or 32 players and without having a bunch of bye rounds... here is the format-- We have 21 players (as of NOW) - each player will play every other player a "5 point match" using the cube -- Crawford rule in effect-- I also think that each game should be rated-- it most likely will take MORE than one game to reach 5 points - you just play until you complete 5 points- when you finish the match report the win or loss to me and I will post it here. http://r4zzm4t4zz.yolasite.com/ so there will be twenty one 5 point matches to play and he with the most wins will be the WINNER and we will also have 2nd third and fourth and so on-- this format will allow everyone to play each and every player -- I know there are pros and cons to any format - and this is what I have chosen to do- being it is a first we do not know obstacles that may come up - I am HOPING that we keep the play at a good pace and I will ALSO add that when setting up the games no more than 2 day response time (which is the minimum)-- YOU MAY or may not be able to be playing ALL the games based on your membership but IF you are not limited you should be playing as many games as possible simultaneously-- communicate the running score with each other as the games are completed-- 5 point matches should not take too long- I was contemplating single games but wanted to make it a little more challenging-- if you do NOT complete all of your matches the games that have been completed will be counted but the unfinished games will be LOSSES- (for tournament purposes) I set up the link above to keep track -- gonna jump in with both feet- and start this thing on Monday morning- in the meantime I will field questions and concerns - and will consider revisions by committee.. ( but host has final say )-- I want this to be FUN and FAIR and competitive- it is volunteer time so constructive criticism is welcomed - just criticism is not. I am including ALL 21 players to start and I can even ADD MORE if someone wants to jump in -- before midnight MONDAY - after that the field will be closed. thanks and have fun and good playing- DO NOT START ANY GAMES UNTIL MONDAY- and I will be accepting results here- and POST - as reported finished- a five point match is a WIN and a WIN = 1 point-- MAX points earned is then 20 points (with 21 participants) -- any questions ?? lol !! |

A question Hi, first off, cheers for hosting 2nd tournament. You say 1 win = 1 point, so am I right in thinking you get more for gammon/backgammon? Newbie to cube/tournaments |

cube if you have NEVER used a cube before...... ummm - quick study!! https://sites.google.com/site/backgammonlessons/rules-of-thumb-for-doubling-cube and there is MANy more web pages (entire chapters in books) on doubling- but to answer your question - 1 win = 1 point--in the Tourny but to earn one win in the tourney you have to defeat your opponent in a 5 point match-- the doubling cube is IN PLAY at your discretion--- cant teach you about the strategy of doubling here. but IN MY HUMBLE opinion is a BIG PART of backgammon and you should be able to use it.. I can try to help if you want-- let me know-- |

help for cube and bg strategy in general if you're not very familiar with cubes like r4zz said its an extremely important thing to know in competitive backgammon.. a really good place for any player to start is by downloading gnubg and playing against the computer in as hard a setting as you can manage with a full 5pt crawford game on. you will believe a computer can cheat and that it has grown to hate you... but its probably the best tool other then daily games against an old guy in the park i can think of. once you finish a game or match you can analyze your moves and it will give you ratings on how well you moved and how good your decisions with the cube are. a couple of days/weeks/months against gnubg and you will see a steady rise in your strategy and use with cubes. but you will still believe a computer can have feelings about you and cheat. even though its as random as it possibly can be. |

An answer (hopefully the right one!) You play each player in a 5 point match. First to reach 5 points wins and for your match win you get 1 point towards your tournament total. That is the player who has the most overall match wins will win the tournament. Max 20 wins, max 20 points. The cube may help you win any individual match by increasing the value of any game within that match. If you or your opponent never uses the cube you will need at least 5 games to get a winner. Use the cube a few times and that match may only take one game. In a similar way Gammons and Backgammons will get a player closer to their 5 point goal in any match. A match winner will only ever get 1 point in their tournament total regardless of their winning margin. |

clarification you will be playing 5 point matches-- one match with each other participant so you will be playing all 21 participants == the format is 5 point matches ( with cube) - for example if you double and then go on to win - by a gammon that game would be worth 4 points and you would be up 4-0 in the match - the match would NOT be complete until someone achieves 5 points (Crawford rule applies)- could speed up play too- If I am behind- and decline a double game over- I lose one point - on to the next game-- WHEN you complete a MATCH - a W would be recorded - in the spread sheet - a W= 1 point with the BEST undefeated score available - 21- - everyone is in --to the end-- winner will be most wins (obviously) - - will make more sense once we get a few matches done -- if you have never played this format before-- only sad part is no cashier-- lol!! |
