Honest yiannakos, the punter's friend

If UK1 are offered at 8/1 (in good old fashioned British style - I believe the rest of the world has gone metric), also called "eight to one against", it means you put £1 on the table, he puts £8 down - or 8 times your stake if it's more than £1, and if UK1 wins you take it all, otherwise he does. Modesty prevents me from saying this represents quite good value for you the punter (placing the bet).

Normally yiannakos would have so much money placed on this that he would be forced to reduce his odds to cut his losses, first maybe to 15/2, 6/1, 100/30, all the way down to 1/1 or "Evens" where he exactly matches your stake. Sometimes bets are so heavily backed that you get teams offered at "odds on", where your stake is more than the bookies', for example 8/11 ("eleven to eight on") where if you stake £11 you will only take £8 from him.

You never see a poor bookie, and they normally drive around in Rolls Royces or Jaguars.

If you don't like it...

Hardly the punter's friend as 8/1 is given without UK1 having made the 8-team playoffs yet
If you don't like my odds-making, let's see yours!

I'll take 100 ratings points at 8/1 if still available...

The favourite in the Grand National is normally only around the 7/1 mark and there are 40 runners in that and 30 enormous obstacles.

I fear that unless you reduce 3 or 4 favourites to 4/1 or less you'll have to hand back the keys to that Silver Shadow

USA1 10/1
CIS 12/1
UK1 14/1

S. Africa 20/1

Knockout round

The first six teams to make the playoffs are:

1. Romania
2. USA4
3. Iran
4. Netherlands
5. Germany
6. UK1

Group B has not yet finished and all teams are still in the running for the playoffs. Australia cannot win first place but still have a shot at second.

My odds are revised as follows:

Romania 3/1
Iran 7/2
Netherlands 7/1
UK1 8/1
USA3 9/1
Germany 12/1
USA3 12/1
CIS 16/1
Spain 30/1
Australia 80/1

Anyone say anything different?

Analysis

Some interesting facts:
*Every single team that qualified to the final round of Nations I, was eliminated at the group stage of Nations 2!
*Every single nation that entered for the first time (Germany, CIS, Netherlands, Romania) qualified to the Knockout phase!
*Not a single game in the Knockout phase of the tournament ended in a draw
*Iran were eliminated by... an Iranian playing for the CIS!
*USA1 were the only team to compete unchanged in Nations 1 and Nations 2.
Spain added a 4th player - Don Ron - while Canada merged its Canada1 and Canada2 teams.
*The following players switched allegiance:
1. Maziariran (from PAK-Iran to Iran)
2. Steelerhead (from USA3 to Germany)
Both, incidentally, captained their new teams.
