Re: forced moves

Yes, you can certainly turn them off. Visit the prefs page and click the 'off' button under the 'Backgammon Forced Moves' option.

Re: forced moves

This is a question for all who are playing backgammon and feel the same as v-dubs:

What don't you like about forced moves?

lack of control

Hiya...I'm a new member and have been playing Backgammon since I was little (I'm old now...lol).

I turned off the forced moves because I'm use to controlling the game from start to finish with board and dice.

Maybe that's silly and maybe one day I'll put the forced moves back on...for now I like to drag myself to the finish line.

However, the game goes quicker when the other person has forced moves on and I get to have my turn quicker...hehe...

I have to say...it did annoy me too initially...so I think it was the first preference I made! In fact, GameKnot does the same thing for the chess games and that annoyed me too.

Maybe I'm just a control freak...lol

Forced moves

I was actually going to post a very different opinion . . . I'd like to see even more automation.

If I am in the process of bearing off at the end, I'd like to see an automatic setting to remove the most number of pieces. For example:

I have three pieces on the 3-spot and two pieces on the 2-spot and I roll a 3-2. Why can't the computer take one off the 3-spot and the 2-spot. I understand that I COULD take one off the 3-spot and move another from the 3-spot to the 1-spot, but that would be silly.

a matter of choice

fair enough comment pokhra...

I guess if there's choice for more or less control then we'll all be happy!

What I would like

Is a simple pop-up stating that there were automati moves made.

I like the automation the way it is   -- games are moving much quicker - it takes a little time to get used to it, but worth it

In this game:

http://zooescape.com/backgammon.pl?v=200&gid=219051

I have three checkers left on the 4,5,and 6 spots. I rolled a 5 and a 4.

Automatically bearing off 4 and 5 would mean that I would have to roll a total of 6 with the next two dice, a probability of 47%.

If I bear off 4, and move 6 to 1, I have, on the next move, a 22/36 chance of rolling at least a 5 with one dice.

If I bear off 5, and move 6 to 2, I have a 23/36 chance of getting at least one 2 and at least one 4 (or double 2 or higher) on the next roll

Automatic bearing off would prohibit me from selecting the best move.

On the other hand, this situation is rare, and normally, I would love to have an automatic bearing off, and would probably select the option if it was available.

Also, potential human error, however unlikely, should not be removed. Moves should only ever be made by the game engine if they are entirely forced.
